I'm Cheryl Mazza, the healing dancer, your host and today we have Reagan Ellis, also known as Red Jackson from the YouTube channel Red Jackson Dance from Wales UK. Red is an inspiring entertainment journalist. He is the host of the YouTube channel Red Jackson Dance where for the past five years he has been interviewing people who worked with Michael Jackson. He has since branched out to interview guests for from movies, TV shows etc and report on events across Wales. In Europe, he's hoping to one day cover a red carpet film premiere which I saw that you put here. The Michael Jackson biopic would be epic. Yes, it would. I hope it would. I. I could totally see you doing that. [00:02:35] Speaker A: I wish, I wish. [00:02:36] Speaker B: Yes, we will put that out there for you. [00:02:39] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, we'll manifest it. [00:02:41] Speaker B: Yes, we will. We will, we will manifest it. So welcome Red to the podcast. [00:02:46] Speaker A: Thank you so much for having me on. It's exciting to be like the other side of the. Of the interview table. [00:02:53] Speaker B: Yeah, no, I'm sure. And I'm just, I'm excited to have you on. I love your podcast. And hearing all the stories, and you're great at that, so I appreciate it. [00:03:02] Speaker A: Thank you. [00:03:03] Speaker B: Yeah, you're welcome. Well, so tell me then, what is your Michael Jackson story? When did he discover you? [00:03:09] Speaker A: I was. How old was I? I was 10, I want to say. Yeah, I was 10. And my parents wanted to go to a Michael Jackson tribute show called Thriller Live. And it was coming to our, like, local. Local city. So my parents wanted to go and they asked me. I was like, no, who's Michael Jackson? Yeah, that's old. I don't know. But I went along, you know, I wasn't really expecting much. And I remember just being like, wow, how can people move like that? Seeing these dancers, sort of, they were like replicating the Thriller video, the Smooth Criminal video, and just being like, how can they do that? So it was strange because I saw a tribute before I actually saw Michael Jackson. I mean, I'm sure when I was younger, I probably saw a video somewhere, but I hadn't really logged. So I went home after the show, and then for days afterwards, it was on YouTube tutorials. How can I move like that? [00:04:25] Speaker B: Right? [00:04:25] Speaker A: Because I was just entranced. And then it was a matter then of going back and watching Michael and then going into the dance, going into the music, the different tours. And from there, really it started with the music and the dance. And from then on, I just sort of explored all the kind of aspects of his life online. And then in 2020, I started an Instagram account where I was trying to dance sort of in Michael's style. Through that account, I got some like, connections, like Travis Payne, Michael's choreographer, commented on one of my posts, that sort of thing. And then I just sort of had this idea one day. I've always wanted to have a YouTube channel, but I had an idea of like, what if I interviewed people who worked with him? Because I want to know more about it. And I thought, I've already got some connections through Instagram and it was lockdown, so everybody's at home anyway. But I was quite shy. I was really shy. And I was like, nobody's gonna want to talk to like a 12 year old. And I thought. But I didn't even have the confidence to do that. And so I would write questions, email it to the person, and they would record themselves answering it. So I did that with like, Stacy Walker, Michael's choreographer, a few tribute artists. And then I just did a couple of those and built it up. And then I was like, okay, I'm gonna try doing a video call. Like A zoom call interview. And my first ones are absolutely horrible. I can't watch them back. It's. But I'm just really grateful to the people who gave me their time. [00:06:22] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:06:23] Speaker A: And, yeah, I fell in love with it. I was like, I just love hearing people's stories. So I kept doing that and I've been doing that for five years now on my channel. And I've just been really lucky to make connections and get to know people along the way because I've gone to some Michael Jackson fan events and met different people and I've really kind of found that this whole Michael Jackson fan community out there, and through Michael Jackson, I've discovered that I'd like to be an entertainment reporter as a future career. And so I wonder, like, if I hadn't seen that tribute show and seen Michael dancing on YouTube, would I have found this career? So, like, I think everything happens for a reason. And yeah, I just think because of Michael Jackson, that sort of set me down this path which has informed my decisions about what I want to study at school and what career I want to go down. And so, yeah, that's what I've been doing. I'm on YouTube and now I've branched out to interviewing, like, film guests and TV show actors on another YouTube channel. And I'm just sort of pursuing that. But it all started with. With Michael Jackson. [00:07:46] Speaker B: Wow. So amazing. I love that he, like, brought you kind of like your dream career, you know. [00:07:54] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:07:55] Speaker B: That you're like, right off the bat just following, following that, you know, following your heart. [00:08:00] Speaker A: I think, like, with lockdown, a lot of people were doing their own little kind of projects and things, so it was just my. It was my hobby and that sort of turned into a, you know, hopeful career now. [00:08:17] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:08:18] Speaker A: All because of Michael Jackson and just hearing the stories, like, from people who knew him, that's really special because, like, the more people I interview, it builds this kind of picture of who Michael Jackson was. [00:08:34] Speaker B: Right. [00:08:35] Speaker A: And like, hearing these stories firsthand, I just feel really, like, grateful and honoured that these people will. That they trust me to do an interview and then for me to put it out there, because a lot of people who worked with him are quite like, some of them have had bad experiences in the past with interviews and. Because what the media did to Michael. [00:08:58] Speaker B: Right. [00:08:58] Speaker A: And so, yeah, I just feel really grateful that people are willing to talk and share these stories because I think it builds this picture of who Michael was and we hear things that we don't really hear in the mainstream media about him. So it's really interesting. [00:09:16] Speaker B: Yeah. And I think it's a. It's important, you know, work that you do, talking to those that have worked with him, because that's like, what the world needs to see, you know, is that side of him instead of what, you know, the media portrayed him as so, so different. You know, like he had such a. Such a pure heart. And that's. That's what the people need to know, is that that was Michael Jackson, you know, besides the entertainer that he was, the great entertainer that he was, you know. [00:09:50] Speaker A: Yeah, for sure. [00:09:51] Speaker B: Do you ever have what I like to call Michael Jackson synchronicities, where he shows up, like, just magically in your life, you know, like, you just like, maybe not even thinking about him, and then like, all of a sudden he just. Out of the blue. [00:10:05] Speaker A: Yeah, I. My generation haven't really grown up with him, so I'm. I've been kind of discovering him online and through books and stories and hearing, like, learning about the past. So that's been really interesting and. Because most of my generation, at least the people I know, don't really listen to him or that type of music. But. Yeah, then sometimes it just pops up. Like, I was. I've just come back from a trip to Florida. I went to the university out there and there was a. There was a karaoke night. And some of my friends out there knew that I, you know, I tried to dance a bit like, like in Michael's style. And they're like, oh, you should dance. And I was like, oh, I don't know. You know, if somebody happened to sing like Billie Jean or something, I would. But, you know, I didn't expect that would happen because they were all singing, like, modern kind of songs. So I went out the room and I come back and somebody's like up on the. Sort of up at the front loading Billie Jean on their karaoke machine. And they had no idea about, like, what I'd said. I never spoken to them. It was just coincidence. [00:11:34] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:11:35] Speaker A: Then all my friends were like, oh, you've gotta go slowly enough. And I was like, oh, do you mind if I dance? And this guy was like, okay, like a bit confused. Then he starts singing Billie Jean and I start trying to dance to it and people start cheering and like, it was just so unexpected. Yeah, like, there's fun things like that, you know. [00:12:01] Speaker B: Right. [00:12:01] Speaker A: Michael Jackson pops up and you're kind of reminded that he is really relevant to. And his music has absolutely stood the test of time. And there are people, like, in my generation who do listen to him and do enjoy his music. [00:12:18] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, that's great. I love that story. [00:12:23] Speaker A: You grew up with him, though, right? [00:12:24] Speaker B: I did, yeah. Yeah. [00:12:26] Speaker A: Awesome. [00:12:27] Speaker B: Yeah, I was definite. I'm blessed to be able to have, you know, been on this earth while he was still here. [00:12:35] Speaker A: So. Yeah, I kind of mentioned, like, the Michael mania and, like, the excitement when a new album would release. [00:12:42] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:12:43] Speaker A: It's insane. Like, seeing videos of people fainting. It's. [00:12:48] Speaker B: I know, I know. I often, like, I never got to see him live, but I was like. I was almost, like, scared to go see him live because if I fainted, I would have been so mad that I missed it. [00:13:02] Speaker A: I know. I feel so bad for those people. [00:13:05] Speaker B: It was like, people. I don't know, like, people fainted probably from, like, just from his energy, but also because it was probably so freaking hot because it was like everybody was just up against each other, you know, So I don't. I don't know how I would have fared in that. I've been fighting for my life to stay. Yeah. But, yeah, I. You know, I got to see him. Like, I remember, like, MTV and VH1, they would have, like, Michael Jackson weekends, you know, and I would record them and when I was younger, and then when I went to college, I. I would bring those VHS tapes with me and watch them because I. I went to college for dance. Like, dancing is my passion. Michael introduced me to dance when I was, like, 7 years old. And that's what I would do, like, on the weekends. Because when I watch Michael Jackson, I get inspired, my creativity starts flowing, you know, and then I get to, like. Then it was like more like choreography and, you know, stuff for. For classes when I was in college. But, yeah, it was great growing up with him. [00:14:17] Speaker A: That's awesome. [00:14:18] Speaker B: Yeah, I mean, he was pretty old, but when I was young, but not old, but, you know, it wasn't like, I grew up from, like, the Jackson 5, so, you know, I don't really, like, know much of that era. Like, I still need to go back and, like, look at, like, when he first started, you know, I was more like. Like, I'm an 80s kid, you know, so. But more like the 90s is what stands out to me. Like, dangerous and, you know, all of that. Invincible, early 2000s, like, all of that. [00:14:49] Speaker A: So, yeah, this was fascinating, though, isn't it? Like, his career just spend, like, such a huge amount of time and, like, he's got so many different, like, eras and kind of looks and music styles that he sort of. He Achieved so much within that time span. [00:15:08] Speaker B: It's like. [00:15:09] Speaker A: It's almost like different people. Like the 80s. Michael Jackson, 2000s. Michael Jackson. [00:15:15] Speaker B: Right. [00:15:15] Speaker A: Fascinating to. Just to learn about. [00:15:18] Speaker B: Yeah, it is. I agree. Well, do you have a favorite Michael Jackson song? [00:15:25] Speaker A: Oh, how do you answer that? I know everyone says that favorite Michael Jackson song. I think what I like about Michael Jackson as well is how different his songs are, which makes it so hard to choose. Like, you can't compare, like, I don't know, Beat it to Liberian Girl to Don't Stop till you get Enough. They're also like, he tapped into so many different genres that like, you can't choose. It depends on, you know, my mood or. Yeah, you know, like, I just can't pick one. [00:16:03] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:16:04] Speaker A: Trying to think what I've been listening to recently. There's not just one. You just Michael Jackson and just let it do itself. [00:16:12] Speaker B: Let it shuffle. [00:16:13] Speaker A: Yeah. No skips. Right. I really don't know. I can't decide. But like, as far as the short films go, Smooth Criminal, for me, just like encapsulates like, just cool Michael Jackson, you know, he's there with a hat. [00:16:30] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:16:31] Speaker A: He's dancing. And it's just. He's got this aura and that real superstar kind of power. We really, really see that in Smooth Criminal for sure. [00:16:42] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. No, that's a great gangster Michael right there, you know. [00:16:47] Speaker A: How about you? Have you got a favorite song? [00:16:50] Speaker B: I do, and I do agree it depends on, like, your mood or like, maybe what, you know, you're going through in life, that kind of thing. But my favorite is the Way youy Make Me Feel. Only because that brings me back to, like, childhood when I used to, like, pretend I was that girl in the. In the video and dance around the living room, Walk around the living room like he was chasing me. Yeah. So it brings me back to that time. [00:17:22] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:17:23] Speaker B: Yeah. But I also love, like, Keep the Faith, you know, that's like, always been a go to if I'm going through like a hard time or something like that, you know. [00:17:32] Speaker A: Definitely. [00:17:33] Speaker B: You know, I, of course, love all the greats, but I like to try to find ones that are, like, not as well known. [00:17:42] Speaker A: Yeah. Like, his sort of music catalog is just so, so huge. And like, all the songs have, like these messages embedded in them. It's. I really like that his music. I mean, some of the songs are just about, like, love or dancing, but some of them really have a message to them. And I think, like, compared to a lot of the songs on the radio today, I really kind of. I really kind of admire, like, that. The craftsmanship and the sort of. The love, I guess, he kind of put into all of his work. [00:18:22] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, definitely. I mean, his. His music is. It's not like any other, you know. No, it's very timeless. Yeah. And timeless. Like I always say, like, even the stuff that he sang about, you know, like Earth Song, they don't care about us. Like, all that stuff is still relevant, you know, today. [00:18:46] Speaker A: So it's like, more than ever. [00:18:48] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. And then, of course, like, man in the Mirror and that stuff is just very inspiring to, you know, look at yourself first before, and that will make the change, you know. So, yeah, it's. So everything is definitely timeless. What do you want the world to know about Michael Jackson? [00:19:08] Speaker A: I think just kind of listening to his music, like, I think the themes, like we just said, really kind of are more relevant now than ever in a lot of the songs. And, yeah, I think more. It's difficult to say. [00:19:35] Speaker B: I know. [00:19:36] Speaker A: I think more artists, I think, should sort of have those kind of themes and try to have such an impact with their music. And the way he kind of donated to charity and things without the cameras. I see so many videos on online of, like, people recording themselves giving, like, things out to homeless people, which is great. But again, it's like, why? Why do you have to record it? [00:20:07] Speaker B: Right. [00:20:07] Speaker A: You know, Michael Jackson would go in with, like, no paparazzi, no cameras, and he would just give to give, not for the attention. [00:20:19] Speaker B: Right. [00:20:21] Speaker A: So, yeah, I admire the sort of humanitarian side, and I think not many people know about that so much. And, yeah, that really ties into the music where he sort of fought and talked about these issues as well, which made his music so, like, impactful and so inspiring. Instead of just singing about, you know, something that's been written about times and times before. [00:20:59] Speaker B: Right. [00:21:00] Speaker A: And how he always tried to sort of use technology and things and push the boundaries with his music. Like, with Dangerous, like, he was, like, pushing the pushing the way he could sort of manipulate music and then going into the R and B genre. And same with, like, the Moonwalk. He learned that from, like, street dancers, and he sort of took these new moves, like popping and locking and sort of brought them to the mainstream. I like how he was always trying to kind of make something new and make something more exciting and instead of just playing it safe. So I think, yeah, it's just interesting to read about and hear about the way he sort of worked and. Yeah, I think I just admire that and that sort of inspires me to kind of be creative and inspires me to want to talk to more of these people who've worked with Michael to hear more and more stories that I think more fans and maybe not fans should know. [00:22:17] Speaker B: Yeah. Do you have a favorite guest that you've had on your podcast? I know it's probably hard to choose. [00:22:24] Speaker A: Yeah, it's hard. [00:22:26] Speaker B: Like, or, like, favorite, like, episode, like, story that was told or something like that that stands out to you? [00:22:34] Speaker A: I think they all stand up for different reasons because, like, Overall, across my two channels and some events, I've done, like, over 100 interviews now, but I can still remember, like, every single one. And, like, I always remote. I always remember the moment. Like, I booked it. Like, they said, oh, yes, let's do it on this day. Like, I remember where I was, what I was doing, because I think everyone, even now, after interviewing people who worked with him for about five years, it's still just as exciting. And I'm trying to interview people who get who are closer and closer to him, which means it's getting harder because a lot of people are quite, like, under the radar. [00:23:16] Speaker B: Right. [00:23:16] Speaker A: Or don't have social media or things like that. But I think the stories are more and more personal as well then. But, yeah, they all stand out for different reasons. I mean, my first ever one was Stacey Walker, and she. I remember waking up and she'd sent me, like, an audio recording of her answering questions. I remember being so excited to listen to that as soon as I woke up. My first zoom call was a guy called Robert Taylor. Robert. Robert Taylor Jr. He's an entertainer, and he performed for Michael, and he was like, I was nervous. It was my first ever one. And he could not have been kinder and more sort of bubbly. And that sort of really, like, that really made me want to keep doing it, you know? Yeah, he made it so fun. And some people just say, like, really nice things and give really nice feedback at the end, and it sort of really reminds you, like, people. Some of the people who worked with Michael do really want to share these stories and want to sort of talk to the fans, and there's something really nice about that. But, yeah, it varies. They're all special for different reasons. Whether it's interviewing bodyguards, which a lot of the time is a lot more serious, but a lot more. There's some thrilling stories in there, or, like, choreographers talking about how Michael worked and how he put steps together. Like, whether I'm interviewing, like, a musician or, you know, somebody who was A friend of Michael. They're all special stories and they're all different for. For a reason. But yeah, they're all. Yeah, I can't pick favorites because they just all, like. They all mean a lot to me in a lot of ways. But yeah, I'm always working to like, book the next interview all the time. But it takes time because it depends on people's schedules and things. But still, still going with it and hoping for only like, bigger. Bigger and better videos. [00:25:33] Speaker B: Yeah, no, you will. Well, hopefully, yeah. [00:25:39] Speaker A: And the sort of fan community as well is really special. Like, I've been to an event in London called the Kingvention. [00:25:49] Speaker B: Yes. [00:25:50] Speaker A: Yeah. And I've done some interviews there and I almost don't like talking about it because I don't want to sound like I'm bragging, but I've had people come up to me and they've said, like, oh, I've watched your videos. I really like what you do. And that a part of it's kind of strange because it's like people kind of recognize me. They've watched me, like, oh, wow. But it's just like really heartwarming. Really nice to know that, like, people actually watch my videos. Like, people actually. It's not like a number views, it's like actual people. [00:26:30] Speaker B: Right. [00:26:31] Speaker A: And yeah, I feel like going to events like that. It's kind of like a family almost. Like everyone kind of knows each other and you can talk to anybody there because everybody likes Michael Jackson. You've all got something in common. [00:26:47] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:26:48] Speaker A: And yeah, through events like that, I've met some wonderful people. I've got a sponsor, Jonathan Downey from Michael Jackson Market, who I always talk with, and he could not be more supportive. And, yeah, I've just had people be really, really supportive of me and my journey. And there's just so many people from all over the world I've met because of Michael Jackson, because I saw these videos of him, because of this tribute show I saw that I didn't even want to go to. Like, Right. Yeah. It's just kind of crazy how one thing has led to another. So, yeah, there's so many, like, favorite memories of just talking to people because not only has it made me, like, sort of land on a career that I want to pursue, but I used to be really shy and I'm quite a confident person. And through sort of pushing myself to talk to people and interview them online, that sort of brought me out my shell. So, like, that's all happened because of this Michael Jackson channel, like, right it's really strange how one kind of musical artist has sort of changed me and the way I view things as. Well, it's. Yeah. I think I have a lot to owe to. Like that one night I decided to see these guys dancing. [00:28:23] Speaker B: Yeah, it's. [00:28:24] Speaker A: Yeah. And what you've done with this podcast is incredible. [00:28:29] Speaker B: Thank you. [00:28:31] Speaker A: How did the idea for that come about? [00:28:36] Speaker B: Well, a couple years ago, I went on what I like to call my Michael Jackson vacation, and I went to California with a bunch of other Michael Jackson fans, and I did, like, it was a Michael Jackson retreat. So I have two friends from Canada, Brenda and Siren, who decided to do a Dancing the Dream retreat in California. So I was like, I gotta go. So we went. And then from there, after the retreat, we went to. To, like, Neverland area. You know, we stayed like 20 minutes outside of. Was it Los Olivos? And then, you know, we went to Neverland a few days in a row and hung out out front there. And that was just like, amazing experience. You know, you can definitely feel like his energy there, and it's so peaceful. And then after that, we went to LA and, you know, I did the whole, like, went to go see the Thriller House and the Palace Theater and all that stuff. And then it was like the most amazing 10 days of my life, you know, Like, I was just totally immersed in Michael Jackson and around a bunch of people that love him, too. So, you know, I don't get that every day. So when we were done, I was like, I want more of Michael in my life. I don't know what that looks like. So I put it out there into the universe. And then the idea of, like, talking to other fans about, like, their story, because if you, you know, every Michael Jackson fan, Moonwalker, whatever you want to call us, have, has a story of how he came into their. Their lives, you know, and to me, that's interesting. Like, I love to hear everybody's story and how he's inspired them, because we all have ways that he's inspired us, and it's all centered around how he's inspired us to become better person and to live more in our purpose and learn how to actually love. Because the whole community is so loving and compassionate and. And it's like we continue that legacy of his, of the loving, kind and compassionate person that he was and giving, you know, so. Yeah. [00:31:08] Speaker A: Wow. That's awesome. I really admire what you do because I think the fans, you know, the fans make up that community. And I mean, there's so many fans out there. But hear different stories from all over the world and have them in one place as well on your podcast is. Yeah, it's really exciting to hear, like, the similarities and differences and how. How things align. [00:31:34] Speaker B: Yeah, no, I love it. [00:31:35] Speaker A: And it's. [00:31:36] Speaker B: It's become like my passion. Like, that's why I don't mind getting up, you know, 4 o' clock in the morning to do this interview at 5. You know, like, I just. I wish I could do this all day, you know, like, this is. Yeah, this is definitely like, a love of mine, a passion of mine. And. And it's also my way of, you know, I don't know, giving back to Michael in some way by sharing his love with. With the world. You know, everyone talks about how much they love him, so that's incredible. Yeah. I mean, is there anything else that you would like to talk about? They can think of anything else. [00:32:18] Speaker A: I think, like I said, I'm just really grateful and it's sort of nice to kind of reflect on how things have aligned and how one thing has led to another. And. Yeah, I'm just grateful that I've met the people I've met sort of on this journey through Michael Jackson. And like, even now, talking to you, it's fascinating to hear, like, other fan stories. Like, even though we're like different generations, like, have this thing in common, like, there's just something really exciting to me about how this shared interest can sort of bond so many different people together. So, yeah, it's. I've been a Michael Jackson fan now for seven or eight years and, you know, no sign of stopping. I'm only like, I'm still discovering more things and new things about his life. Like you said, I listen to more and I know more about, like, the later years, like, 80s 90s. And so, like, I'd love to go back and learn more about the Jackson 5 era, but, like, you could go on forever just discovering new things about Michael and his craftsmanship and his artistry. [00:33:56] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:33:56] Speaker A: And so, yeah, I'm just sort of inspired by the way he worked and his creativity and. Yeah. Then also the message he. He put into his work. But thank you so much for having me on and for everything you do. [00:34:13] Speaker B: Yes, no, thank you. It's been great getting to know you more and hearing your story. And for everyone watching or listening, make sure you check out Red Jackson's YouTube. We'll put that in the show notes, so this way you can get right to it. [00:34:31] Speaker A: Thank you very much. Yeah, I've got an interview with Bill Whitfield. Michael Jackson's head of security and bodyguard. That came out a couple weeks ago. So for now that's the most recent one on there. But I'm always working towards sort of booking more. I'm always talking to people, but it depends on schedules. So hopefully now, the next few weeks I'll have something exciting coming out. But there's like, there's loads of videos on there. So, yeah, if anybody's interested, please consider checking out. [00:35:04] Speaker B: Yes, please do. Please do. Yes. Well, thank you again so much. [00:35:10] Speaker A: Thank you. It's, it's a pleasure. And yeah, I love, you know, it's hearing about your story as well, not just sharing mine. So, yeah, I appreciate it. It means a lot. [00:35:22] Speaker B: Yes. Well, everyone, thank you so much for listening. It's all for love and we will see you next time. [00:35:28] Speaker A: Bye.
