[00:02:03] Speaker A: Thank you so much for having me. Actually, I watched, I watched your episode with.
I forget, I forgot his name. His name's like Owl something.
[00:02:12] Speaker B: Oh yeah, Big Al.
[00:02:14] Speaker A: Yeah, Big Al. That was really interesting.
[00:02:16] Speaker B: Yes. Yeah, he was a lot of fun to talk to.
[00:02:19] Speaker A: Yeah, you have some nice work. I really like it.
[00:02:22] Speaker B: Thank you. I appreciate that. I hope to get more people on that also knew Michael Jackson, but because we all have a story, right?
So tell me about your story. When did you first discover Michael Jackson? How did he come into your life?
[00:02:38] Speaker A: Shoot Wells. It was when I was younger.
[00:02:43] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:02:44] Speaker A: You know the store brand Aldi?
[00:02:46] Speaker B: Yes. Yeah.
[00:02:47] Speaker A: So my parents were actually taking my siblings and I to go to Aldi and on the trip there they. My dad specifically, he likes showing me music videos. Him specifically, he just, he just does That a lot, and he still does.
But he showed me Thriller and that scared me, actually. I think.
I think Thriller was actually more into my life, I think, I think you showed me Smooth Criminal, actually.
[00:03:17] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:03:18] Speaker A: But I. I loved it and I think that's, that's what really sparked my. My creative mindset. I feel like after watching that, my just, my creative mindset got better. I feel like, wow.
[00:03:33] Speaker B: Okay. So then when you saw the video, Smooth Criminal kind of got your mind going and started thinking about.
[00:03:41] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:03:41] Speaker B: Did you do any more, like, deep dive into Michael Jackson after that? Like, how did he continue to show up?
[00:03:51] Speaker A: Well, there's.
To show up. I feel like, you know, I was talking about my siblings and stuff.
They were also shown the video next to me in the car.
[00:04:02] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:04:04] Speaker A: We had a cookout one night a few months after that video was shown to me, me and my brother, my twin brother, actually, I'm a twin. But we bonded over Michael.
[00:04:14] Speaker B: Oh, wow.
[00:04:15] Speaker A: We had a cookout with, like, friends and family across, like in my neighborhood specifically.
And we got a karaoke machine and we son Michael, we were like eight years old, I believe, and we sung Michael. But I feel like that's where he actually showed up for the first time.
[00:04:34] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:04:35] Speaker A: It's a funny story, but it's. It's a long story, but I think that's where he showed up first at that cookout.
[00:04:45] Speaker B: Nice. I love it. Michael wanted to be at the cookout.
[00:04:49] Speaker A: Yeah, absolutely.
[00:04:52] Speaker B: Well, how does Michael Jackson inspire you?
[00:04:56] Speaker A: I think to be a better version of yourself, just to be a better person. I feel like that's also really helped for me to be a better person. Right. He's inspired me over, like three years since I've been doing this just to be a better person. That's how he's inspired me and start to start, like, ballet. I feel like he inspired me to start ballet.
But yeah, I feel like, yeah, that's. That's how he actually inspired me.
[00:05:32] Speaker B: Great. Well, ballet.
So I'm a former, like, dancer.
Well, once a dancer, always a dancer. But I remember when I started dancing as a kid, I started dancing because of Michael Jackson. Like when I discovered. When he came into my life, that's when my parents were like, let's put her in dance class. Because I was like, dancing all over the place.
[00:05:54] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:05:54] Speaker B: And I started out in ballet and I hated it.
I was like, this is too slow, mom.
I wanted to do hip hop and jazz already, you know.
But then I realized that ballet is like the foundation of all dancing. So then I Grew to love it, you know, to appreciate it more. I was definitely never a ballet dancer, but, you know, I. I could appreciate how that technique could help in all the other styles of dance.
[00:06:25] Speaker A: Yeah.
So, yeah, they stretch you out a lot, I feel like.
[00:06:30] Speaker B: Yes. So I actually miss ballet because I don't have that flexibility anymore, so maybe I should get back into it maybe. Yeah. I know they have some online stuff now that are like workouts that are ballet.
[00:06:42] Speaker A: So they got online ballet?
[00:06:45] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. I'm sure they're like videos, you know, not like instructor led, but there might be.
[00:06:51] Speaker A: That's cool.
[00:06:52] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:06:53] Speaker A: How long did you do ballet?
[00:06:56] Speaker B: I did ballet throughout my dancing.
I don't want to say career. I didn't really have a dancing career. I taught, but, like, I started at 7, and then I took ballet every year, you know, and then I went to college for dance. That's what my degree is in performing arts. And I. Jazz dance was my study, so I took ballet throughout college, too.
[00:07:25] Speaker A: Wow.
[00:07:26] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:07:27] Speaker A: How long were you in college? I don't know, the.
[00:07:29] Speaker B: Four years.
[00:07:30] Speaker A: Four years in college for dance?
[00:07:32] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:07:34] Speaker A: Wow.
I reckon you're like a really great dancer.
[00:07:39] Speaker B: I was.
[00:07:42] Speaker A: Just a little rusty.
[00:07:44] Speaker B: Maybe a little rusty. But I'm sure if I got back into, like, stretching and. And all that, it would be like muscle memory eventually would go back to, you know, to what it was. So it's.
[00:07:54] Speaker A: Yeah, it's. It's. It's crazy how bad dance can look if you don't stretch.
[00:08:01] Speaker B: Oh, my God. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:08:03] Speaker A: Awful. It's.
[00:08:04] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:08:05] Speaker A: So stiff. It's.
I don't know.
[00:08:08] Speaker B: Yeah. I wonder what Michael's routine was, stretching and all that. Before going on stage and performing.
[00:08:16] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:08:17] Speaker B: Or even rehearsing.
I wonder if there's got to be videos out there or something about with that. I have to research that. And if anybody watching this or listening knows, let us know. Put it in the comments.
[00:08:33] Speaker A: Maybe something on Reddit. I feel like Reddit always does something.
Yeah. They might have Michael's stretch routine or just routine in general.
[00:08:41] Speaker B: Yeah, I'll have to look it up.
[00:08:44] Speaker A: I know I personally don't use Reddit, but what I've heard about Reddit, I don't. Yeah, they might have something on there.
[00:08:51] Speaker B: Yeah, they seem to have a lot of information. I don't really use it either, but, you know, anytime I Google something, it comes up with something on Reddit, so.
[00:08:58] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:09:00] Speaker B: Well, do you ever have what I like to call Michael Jackson synchronicities, where he just, like, magically shows up in your Life.
And it's like, hey, Mike's here.
[00:09:14] Speaker A: Oh, shoot.
I think when I'm performing.
[00:09:17] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:09:18] Speaker A: Yeah. When I'm dancing, like, on. Even, like at a bar, on a stage, he's always there with me, like, and I don't. Like, I don't see a bow to the performance. I'm like, he was there with me. He's kept my energy going and to interact with my audience as well. He's always there.
[00:09:36] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:09:37] Speaker A: Well, what's it called again? Symphonies or something?
[00:09:40] Speaker B: What?
Synchronicities.
[00:09:43] Speaker A: I don't know how to pronounce that. I'm sorry.
[00:09:46] Speaker B: That's okay. Yeah, synchronicities. Like, it's almost like he just shows up in your life magically. Like, for me, a lot of the times I'll be, like, somewhere random or you wouldn't expect, like, a Michael Jackson song to come on or something like that, you know, and.
Or, like, one of my favorite ones is when I'm, like, driving and all of a sudden I see, like, a Peter Pan bus or, you know, or license plate that says, like, MJJ777.
Yeah.
[00:10:16] Speaker A: That's so fascinating. Wow. Yeah, that is fascinating.
[00:10:20] Speaker B: But, yeah, I could see how he would show up, you know, for you while you're performing and.
And, you know, still living his legend.
[00:10:30] Speaker A: You know, Especially for my first performance back in, like, I believe it was, like, 2022, I had my first performance.
It was Billy Jean, but it was at a New Year's party, and I was nervous. Like, I was nervous before the performance, and then I got on stage and I wasn't nervous at all. So I just felt like Michael was there to come for me in a way, because when I said I wasn't nervous when I got up there, I wasn't nervous before. Like, before I got up there, right before I got on the stage, I was nervous.
Like, my. Everything was. Yeah, it was nervous.
[00:11:11] Speaker B: Yeah. Once you got on there, Mike was like, you got this.
[00:11:16] Speaker A: Exactly.
[00:11:17] Speaker B: Yeah.
Awesome.
Well, tell me what motivated you to become an impersonator?
[00:11:25] Speaker A: Oh, shoot.
I believe in.
Back in 2022, there was this really tough time in my life, and I was feeling down. I was depressed, Right. So consistently sleeping in bed, just watching shows, not doing anything that would benefit me in any way. But I came across the Michael Jackson video, and when I. And by the way, the, like, I didn't see a Michael Jackson video again until I was, like, 13. Since I was 8. Never saw it. Never saw him again.
But I came across a Michael Jackson video. I think it was Billie Jean and Vicarous on the Dangerous tour.
But I watched that.
And that, that, that. That really sparked something because it's got me to where I am today. But that. That really sparked me. And I believe just a few months after I saw that video, I started dancing. Not ballet, but just started dancing my room and my mom. I remember my mom, she lives in, like, the room right next to me.
And she would come in here and she would actually be concerned because I was stomping the floor too hard when I was dancing.
[00:12:50] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:12:50] Speaker A: And, like, now, you know, still to this day, she'll be downstairs, and the living room is, like, right below my feet. So she'll hear me just dancing my shoes on.
It's annoying. But back to your question. That's where it began. I feel like. I feel like.
I feel like depression can be a great motivator if you use it, right.
[00:13:13] Speaker B: Yeah.
And it seems like for those of us that are, you know, Michael Jackson fans, that he seems to find us or come into our lives like, exactly when we need him, inspiring us, inspiration, do something that we're passionate about or didn't even know that we're going to be passionate about, you know? Makes sense.
[00:13:35] Speaker A: No, that's. That's exactly. You just put it into words. That's exactly what it is. Yeah.
[00:13:41] Speaker B: And then when you were talking about when you first saw the video Smooth Criminal, how that got your creative juices going.
[00:13:49] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:13:49] Speaker B: I find that anytime I watch Michael Jackson, like, concerts or videos or anything like that, if I feel like I'm in a slump, like, create creatively, that he puts me back in that creative flow.
So I totally get that.
[00:14:03] Speaker A: You know, when did. Actually a question to you, when did Michael, like, spark for you?
[00:14:10] Speaker B: When did he spark for me?
[00:14:11] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:14:12] Speaker B: In what sense? What do you mean?
[00:14:15] Speaker A: Like a first music video. What was the first music video you saw? And.
[00:14:21] Speaker B: I think.
I think it was Billie Jean, like the Motown performance.
[00:14:30] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:14:31] Speaker B: I like, remember correctly. I know, like, when I was 7, and I remember seeing, like, this sparkly person on TV. So it had to be the Billie Jean Motown performance, because it's the only. You know, when he had the short hair. Like, that's what comes back to me when I remember seeing, like, being just, like, in awe of this person on tv, gliding across the stage and dancing. And then I was just like, who is that? You know?
And mom and dad were like, that's Michael Jackson. And then history from there.
I was obsessed.
[00:15:08] Speaker A: You're like. You're like, who's Michael Jackson? And they just point at the tv.
[00:15:12] Speaker B: They probably started playing, like, more of his music for me, you know?
And then my dad used to manage a bowling alley when I was little, and I would have to go to work with him, so he would stick me in the bar before it would open.
[00:15:26] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:15:27] Speaker B: And give me full range of the jukebox. And it would be, like, all Michael Jackson and 80s music.
It would be dancing around the bar. Yeah.
[00:15:38] Speaker A: That's nostalgia right there.
[00:15:40] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:15:40] Speaker A: That's great.
Were you a good bowler or did you ever bowl?
[00:15:45] Speaker B: I was a good bowler. I was actually in a league for many years.
[00:15:49] Speaker A: Wow.
[00:15:50] Speaker B: Yeah. I forget what my average was, though. I think it was, like, almost like 200 or something like that.
Or like, in the 190s, you know, my average. But, yeah, I bowled for many years. That was, like, the sport besides dance that I did.
That's awesome because I sucked at everything else.
[00:16:08] Speaker A: Was it competitive at all?
[00:16:11] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. I did some tournaments, too.
[00:16:14] Speaker A: Wow.
[00:16:14] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:16:15] Speaker A: So cool. Are you think you still bowl?
[00:16:18] Speaker B: I haven't bowled in years. No. I still have my ball, though, up in the attic. And my shoes.
Yeah, I kind of miss it. It was fun.
Yeah.
[00:16:30] Speaker A: That's so sweet. So, yeah. Your dad would take you over to the bar before it opened, and they would have the music box. Jukebox.
[00:16:38] Speaker B: Jukebox, yeah. I don't know if you know what that. Do you even know what that is?
[00:16:44] Speaker A: No, not really.
[00:16:46] Speaker B: It was, like, this big machine had, like, records in it, and you would put money in there and you could choose what songs you wanted to play. It was, like this big catalog. You could, like, flip through it and. Yeah.
[00:17:00] Speaker A: Was it, like, colorful and bright?
[00:17:02] Speaker B: Yeah. Yes. Yeah.
[00:17:03] Speaker A: Okay. Okay. Yeah.
[00:17:04] Speaker B: It's definitely an 80s thing. Like, maybe even before that. I don't know.
Yeah.
[00:17:09] Speaker A: Okay. That's awesome.
[00:17:12] Speaker B: Yeah.
Yeah. That was fun. Well, do you have a favorite Michael Jackson song?
[00:17:17] Speaker A: And I feel like it would be wrong for me to say I have a favorite song, because all of them are incredible. Well, I could say one of my favorites. One of my favorite songs is Jam from Dangerous. I love that song. It gets my energy going.
[00:17:33] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:17:34] Speaker A: You know, when I'm drinking on that coffee. Jam, do you have a favorite song?
[00:17:39] Speaker B: I do. It's the way you make me feel.
[00:17:43] Speaker A: That's my dance teacher's favorite song. Yeah. That's a great song, though.
[00:17:47] Speaker B: Yeah.
Do you have a favorite music video by Michael Jackson?
[00:17:51] Speaker A: For nostalgic purposes, I'm gonna say Smooth Criminal.
[00:17:55] Speaker B: Okay.
Have you ever seen Moonwalker? The whole movie?
[00:17:59] Speaker A: I have seen Walker. It's great. Yeah, Yeah, I showed that that not too long ago. He fell asleep. Anyways, it was. It was great.
[00:18:09] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. That's a great movie. Well, what do you want the world to know about Michael Jackson?
[00:18:17] Speaker A: I want the world to know that he's a human being like everyone else.
He has human feelings like everyone else. Don't judge somebody too fast.
That's why I want people to know about him. And it's kind. His kindness as well.
[00:18:31] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:18:33] Speaker A: That's what I want during the world to know about him. 100.
[00:18:36] Speaker B: I love it. Well, how does he continue to spread love in your world?
[00:18:41] Speaker A: How does he continue to spread love? Every day?
Every day.
How about for you?
[00:18:50] Speaker B: Gosh, how does it. He continues to spread love in my world by inspiring me every day to be a better person and to go after my dreams. Plus, he just shows up, you know, anytime I'm in a bad mood or like having a hard day, he just shows up.
[00:19:17] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:19:18] Speaker B: Feel that love in my heart.
[00:19:21] Speaker A: So comforting.
[00:19:22] Speaker B: Yeah. I haven't thought about answering that question in a while.
[00:19:27] Speaker A: Have you been asked that question recently or.
[00:19:29] Speaker B: No, I'm usually the one just asking it. I've never.
I've never actually thought about my answer.
Yeah, I guess it could change too, you know, it just depends on, like, where you're at in your life, you know.
But, yeah, he just shows up constantly and is a constant thought of Michael Jackson every day, you know, sometimes 100 times a day or more.
[00:19:53] Speaker A: Wow.
[00:19:54] Speaker B: Because he's. He's like, just like dance.
He's my passion in life, I think. Someone who taught me. He taught me how to love.
[00:20:04] Speaker A: That's great.
[00:20:04] Speaker B: And that's like, how to love people unconditionally, not judge, you know, because the world can be a very cruel place, as we saw with the way that it treated him so.
[00:20:17] Speaker A: Absolutely.
[00:20:18] Speaker B: But he has all of us to counteract all of that evil crap.
[00:20:25] Speaker A: Evil crap.
Evil crap, you guys.
[00:20:29] Speaker B: Yeah, right. Stop it.
Oh, leave Michael alone.
[00:20:35] Speaker A: Exactly.
[00:20:36] Speaker B: Yeah. We will come for you.
We will defend him.
[00:20:43] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:20:44] Speaker B: Yes. Yes, we will. So do you have any, like, shows coming up?
[00:20:51] Speaker A: Yes, I do, actually. I am booked for the 29th and the 30th. So 29th of August and September 1st.
It's for Michael's birthday.
[00:21:03] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:21:05] Speaker A: Yeah, that's. That's when I'm. That's where I'm booked. It's gonna be great.
[00:21:08] Speaker B: Yes, it is.
[00:21:09] Speaker A: I'm sure nervous. I feel like I'm just. I'm a shy, nervous guy, as you saw before we start talking. But you said we're just two MJ fans having a conversation, and then that just made it seem more comfortable.
[00:21:29] Speaker B: Yeah, Yeah. I mean, that's all we're doing. Talking about Michael.
[00:21:32] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah.
[00:21:34] Speaker B: Sharing our stories with the world.
[00:21:38] Speaker A: Well, do you. Do you have any MJ stories that you want to share?
[00:21:45] Speaker B: Let me think.
Well, I have sort of a business called Divinity in Motion Wellness. And obviously, Divinity Motion is inspired by Michael, but the story behind that is during COVID if I don't dance, then I get depressed and, like, have anxiety and stuff like that, if I don't move my body and dance. So obviously during COVID we weren't able to go out and dance, you know, so I've always. I. I'm into energy healing, too, but dancing was always, like, a healing for me. No matter what I was doing, like, performing or whatever, every. It was always, like, healing.
So I'm like, how can I combine the two?
[00:22:32] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:22:33] Speaker B: So I had the vision of, like, this dance class, but it's like a freestyle class that included, like, energy healing. And I was like, all right, what am I going to call it?
So then one day I'm, like, thinking about it. I'm thinking about this. How am I going to do this? How am I going to put it out in the world? What am I going to call it? And then the song Dangerous comes on, and I heard Divinity in Motion, and I got chills, like, all over my body.
And I was like, that's it.
So I started out calling the class Divinity Emotion. It's now Healing Through Dance, but the business is now Divinity Emotion because we are all Divinity Emotion. And Michael Jackson is Divinity Emotion. You know, like, he's always dancing. We're always moving, moving that energy, healing ourselves.
Because it's a journey. Healing is a journey.
But, yeah, that's what inspired my business name, Divinity in Motion. And it happened several times. It wasn't just that one time that I was thinking about it. I think I even went to a dance recital for someone that I used to teach.
And the opening number was Dangerous. I had no idea.
And I was thinking about the class again at that time, and I was like, okay, more confirmation. Thanks, Mike.
[00:23:54] Speaker A: So it's a business.
You teach classes?
[00:23:57] Speaker B: I do. I do a healing through dance class. That's basically like my main class I use dance is like. It's like I set it up so it's almost like a club because my husband has some DJ lights.
[00:24:11] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[00:24:12] Speaker B: I take some of his lights and I turn off all the lights, and then we put on, like, the DJ lights and they go to the music, and everyone gets to set an intention, and then we all dance together with that intention in mind.
[00:24:24] Speaker A: You just stands, basically.
[00:24:25] Speaker B: Yeah, we just dance it out. Yeah.
[00:24:27] Speaker A: So cool. Wait, that's. That's such a vibe.
[00:24:30] Speaker B: Yeah.
It's like the fun side of healing, you know, like, you could be going through, like, the worst thing.
[00:24:36] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:24:37] Speaker B: And you set the intention of, like, I want to heal this or whatever, and then we all just, like, dance it out, you know?
[00:24:43] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:24:44] Speaker B: And by the end, you're like, yeah, I feel good.
[00:24:48] Speaker A: Are these IRL classes, are they? What, like, real life classes, like, in person.
[00:24:55] Speaker B: They are in person. And on zoom.
[00:24:57] Speaker A: And on zoom. I might join.
[00:24:59] Speaker B: You should. You should. The next One is on the 26th of July of August.
Yeah. And it is, of course, Michael Jackson themed.
[00:25:07] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:25:08] Speaker B: Yeah. Because for his birthday.
[00:25:10] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah. For his birthday. Yeah.
[00:25:12] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:25:12] Speaker A: That's. That's so cool. You run your own business. That's awesome.
[00:25:15] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:25:16] Speaker A: Wow.
[00:25:17] Speaker B: But it's all inspired by Michael. It's just like. That's like everything I do is somehow inspired by him.
[00:25:24] Speaker A: It's built. It's like a scaffold. It's built off of Michael. Right?
Yeah.
[00:25:28] Speaker B: I even have, like, how my logo for the podcast has a picture of him, like, or a silhouette of him in the V.
That's also in my Divinity Emotion logo, you know, Gotta be there.
[00:25:42] Speaker A: Yeah, absolutely. All mj. MJ all around.
[00:25:45] Speaker B: Exactly. Yeah.
I hope you continue to spread his love through being a tribute artist for many years to come, because Michael is timeless.
So.
[00:25:58] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:25:59] Speaker B: And you keep inspiring that younger generation, even younger than you, to find him and to continue. Is there anything else you would like to talk about?
[00:26:09] Speaker A: I. I think we covered most of it. There are. There are some MJ stories, but I feel like that would take too long and we'll go another one.
[00:26:16] Speaker B: It's all right. We got some time.
[00:26:19] Speaker A: I think a good MJ story is when I performed man in the Mirror in front of my church.
[00:26:25] Speaker B: Oh, wow.
[00:26:26] Speaker A: And I, you know, like, at churches, they have, like, these back rooms, like, classrooms and stuff.
I would go or before the performance, I practiced in those rooms for, like, two hours. I got there two hours early, and it was just consistent practice of spinning because he does the spin in man in the Mirror. You probably know what I'm talking about.
[00:26:49] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:26:49] Speaker A: Like six spins or three.
I couldn't get that down for, like, the longest time. I couldn't get it down in the back rooms.
Right. When I got on stage, like, I say Michael, he comforts you when you're dancing, right? When I did those spins, I did them right. I didn't even fail. I.
It's. It's beautiful, you know, because in those back rooms I didn't get any of those spins the way I wanted to.
But when I got on stage, it just, it just happened. Right?
[00:27:22] Speaker B: And that's awesome. Oh my gosh. I love that story.
[00:27:24] Speaker A: That's. That's all I wanted to share.
[00:27:26] Speaker B: Okay, well, thank you so much for being on the podcast and chatting with me.
[00:27:32] Speaker A: Thank you so much.
[00:27:33] Speaker B: It's an absolute pleasure.
[00:27:35] Speaker A: Yeah, thank you truly.
[00:27:37] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:27:38] Speaker A: So fun. We need to talk more.
[00:27:41] Speaker B: Yes. Maybe I can have you back on too. But definitely keep in touch because I love having Michael Jackson friends.
Thanks everyone for watching and listening to it's all for Love. We'll see you later.
[00:27:55] Speaker A: Bye.
